BIOGRAPY
My paintings usually begin with an idea or character in my head. I then use observational drawings of the face and figure together with further details, pattern, birds and objects to bring together the piece on the canvas.
I love portraiture and the challenge that it presents to an artist. Not just to capture a likeness or mimic life but to suggest a character and a story behind the lines.
Taking a contemporary or iconic face and transporting them into another historical period is also something that interests me; how the costumes may change, but the stories repeat through history. A face can look at us from a portrait painted centuries ago and still resonate with us and hint at the universal stories and concerns of today.
I draw every day, an important discipline to further my work; to paint is to be constantly learning and reassessing what it happening on the surface. Mark-making and colour develop over an artist's career as a personal language, and how that changes over time is a reflection of this learning curve and the biography of the painter's life.
In 2011 myself and partner Stuart Allan opened Gallery-Cafe 'Bon Papillon' in the heart of Edinburgh's historic New Town preservation area in Scotland. I now paint in a studio adjacent to the gallery, where Stuart also has a picture framing workshop.
