Diana Carey

Diana Carey was born in Beirut Lebanon to American parents abroad. She was raised in the L.A. area. She moved to San Diego, while married, and raised three children. During that time, she supplemented the family income by writing and teaching art programs, in private and public schools. Since 1997, Diana Carey has been producing art; honing her art style, technique, methods and medium. She has taken her art form from illustration, to paintings on broken stone tile, to her current technique of paint thrown works on large canvas. Carey explains, “I can illustrate, but prefer an impressionist interpretation. Painting on broken stone didn’t allow for realistic rendition, the more I broke the stone, the more I lost the internal critic and became comfortable with abstraction. As I became comfortable with the lack of control over the outcome, I began throwing paint onto a prone canvas, using sticks and brushes.  A technique that afforded even less control than the broken stone work, while still allowing me the impression of an image.”

Carey is a mature female artist, taking on the physically demanding work of the male dominated, abstract expressionist, gestural technique of throwing and splattering paint that was introduced in the early mid 20th century. Though the technique is similar, her work is not derivative of Pollock, rather she’s taking the Pollock technique and reversing it a century to create landscapes expressed in an impressionist style.
